I think the latest updates were forced by Intel as they want to phase out their old chips soon, I don't think Apple had scheduled it as a revision date but didn't have much choice.
It sounds as if the scheduled date was for the WWDC normally around june & I think We'll see a much bigger revision then.
Traditionally Apple's big market isn't the Christmas season, but Back to School. Apple has always scheduled it's updates about 6 months from the time College Students return to classes.
However, regardless of when you bought your new Mac, don't be sad little trooper. No, you don't have the latest and greatest Mac, but you still have an awesome computer that will continue to perform for years to come, and will be supported by the manufacturer for 5 years, 3 years of that under warranty if you were smart and bought Apple Care.
Compare that to the PC world, where the average product life cycle is 18 months. Yep, you buy a shiny new Dell today, and the hot new games that come out in 18 months won't hardly run on it, if at all. 5 years sure sounds like a better deal to me.
What we all have to keep in mind is that Apple is a business. They are a company who's meteoric rise has been in large part due to their close relationship with their customers, but they are still in the game to make money. They make money by keeping a regular update cycle, and not announcing publicly when those updates will arrive.
As much as we all like to feel that Steve and Co. are our buddies, they really aren't. They have a business model which depends on them delivering better equipment, better software, and superior service, but not in making sure we don't spend money with their company.
It is still a bit frustrating as I bought my iMac in December 2007 and today I believe the updated intel chip is now shipping on new iMacs. Maybe the new chip would not make a hell of a lot of difference in speed etc etc etc... Im not a gamer so my needs are different. But I am wanting to move my Dell laptop over and treat myself to a MacBookPro, but wait.... they are going to upgrade those... so.... I am going to wait and bide my time until the MBP has settled down with new features and then go out and buy one! How long will that be? I give it 9 months and then I shall revise my buying power!
Yeah, it was a strange move for Apple too, but what can you do? Keep what you have got for now, it's still a good machine. I'll be upgrading to a new MacBook or MacBook Pro in the summer/autumn.
